Water, the gift of life

"My name is Rous Sopheak, I am 15 years old. I have 4 siblings and my parents are farmers in Reksmey Meanchey village in Cambodia. I used to work on the farm with my family carrying water long distances, it was very tiring work and I was always scared of stepping on a landmine-but I had no choice because my family needed water. My parents are illiterate and poverty bound without hope, I did not want to live the same life as them. Then an aid organisation came to our village and dug a well and pond which meant I did not have a long distance to carry water. I now go to school and can read and write. My family are all a lot happier and my parents often ask me to read things for them. I hope in the future I will get a job and support my family."
